Printmaking -- Remembrance - 9/11

This is a woodblock print based on my memory of images from 9/11.  A woodblock print is made by cutting a design into a wood surface, inking it, placing a sheet of paper on top and running it through the press.  Areas that are cut away become the white portions of the print.  Areas that are left intact become the black.  Texture is achieved by using different sized tools to make different marks in the wood.  This is a larger print: the wooden block measures 18 x 24 inches and the print as a whole measures 22 x 30 inches.

Printmaking -- Duplication

This is an aquatint based on the image of the 9/11 Memorial in Kennewick, Washington.  An aquatint is made by scratching a design onto a copper plate and etching it, then spraying a thin spotty coat onto the plate.  The copper plate may then be dipped into acid to etch tone into the plate.  Portions of the design may be painted over with a resist to prevent that portion from etching.  The plate is usually dipped several times to get varying tones.  This design was dipped seven times with the shortest time being two seconds and the longest being 18 minutes.  The entire printed image has a thin sheet of Chine Colle paper over it to darken it and provide more texture.  The print is 9 x 12 inches.

Printmaking -- Dissolution

This is a line etching based on the image of the 9/11 Memorial in Kennewick, Washington.  A line etching is made by covering a copper plate with a waxy ground, scratching a design into the ground and dipping it into acid.  The plate is usually dipped several time.  Portions of the design may be covered up to prevent the lines from getting deeper and darker.  This plate was dipped seven times with the shortest time being 15 seconds and the longest time being 20 minutes.  After the plate is cleaned, ink is applied, it is run through the press and prints are made.          The blue on the left is from a process called "Chine Colle" in which a thin piece of paper with glue on the back is placed on the plate, the white printing paper is placed on top and the whole thing is run through the press.  The thin Chine Colle paper is supposed to adhere perfectly, forever.  This print is 9 x 12 inches.

Photo -- 9/11 Memorial at Kennewick, WA

This is a photo that I took last summer of the 9/11 Memorial in Kennewick, Washington.  It is just off of Interstate 82 / U.S. 395 on the southern edge of Kennewick.  I use this image in several prints.
